Yes. Your travel insurance can include cover for coronavirus-related situations, subject to the vaccination, travel-advice and other conditions of your policy.
When coronavirus cover may apply
This article explains when coronavirus cover may apply and the main conditions you need to meet.
What conditions apply to coronavirus cover?
For coronavirus-related cover, you need to:
- be up to date with coronavirus vaccinations recommended by the UK NHS, or be medically unable to receive them with this supported by your medical records
- travel to a country or area where the FCDO or WHO is not advising against all travel, or all but essential travel, because of coronavirus
You do not need to provide vaccination evidence when buying your policy, but medical records may be requested if you make a claim.
What coronavirus situations may be covered?
Depending on your policy and circumstances, cover can include:
Cancellation
Cover may apply if you, a family member or travelling companion are diagnosed with coronavirus within 14 days of departure, or if you are required to quarantine on a medical practitioner's orders when your trip is due to start.
Cutting your trip short
Coronavirus cover may apply if you need to return home early because an immediate relative is hospitalised or dies as a result of coronavirus.
Emergency medical expenses
If you contract coronavirus while abroad and need emergency medical treatment, cover may apply under the medical emergency section of your policy.
If coronavirus means you need to extend your trip, or you are quarantined on the orders of a medical practitioner, cover for qualifying additional travel and accommodation expenses is limited to £2,000.
What evidence might I need?
A coronavirus-related claim may require evidence such as a positive test result or supporting evidence of a positive lateral flow test. If quarantine is involved, written confirmation from a treating medical practitioner may also be required.
Coronavirus-related claims are not covered where the policy's vaccination or coronavirus travel-advice requirements are not met.
For other travel vaccinations, cover may also be affected if you have not had recommended vaccinations or followed required preventative treatment for your destination.
Read your policy documents for the full coronavirus terms and exclusions.
