Do you cover pregnancy and childbirth complications?

Yes. Complications of pregnancy and childbirth can be covered for cancellation, cutting your trip short and medical emergency expenses, subject to the policy conditions.

What counts as a pregnancy or childbirth complication?

Pregnancy and childbirth themselves are not considered an illness or injury. The policy defines complications as:

  • Toxaemia
  • Gestational diabetes
  • Gestational hypertension
  • Pre-eclampsia
  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • Molar pregnancy or hydatidiform mole
  • Post-partum haemorrhage
  • Retained placenta membrane
  • Placental abruption
  • Hyperemesis gravidarum
  • Placenta praevia
  • Stillbirth
  • Miscarriage
  • Emergency caesarean section
  • A termination needed for medical reasons
  • Premature birth more than eight weeks before the expected delivery date, or more than 16 weeks if you are expecting more than one baby

These complications can be covered whether they existed when you took out your policy or developed later.

What conditions apply?

Your doctor and midwife must be aware of your travel plans, and you must not travel against medical advice.

There is no cover under the policy if you are travelling on or after the 32nd week of a single pregnancy, or on or after the 24th week of a multiple pregnancy. Childbirth at or after these points is not considered a covered complication and you will not be covered.

If you become pregnant after buying your policy or booking your trip, whichever is later, and you will be over these limits by your return date, cancellation cover may apply.

Airlines, ferries, cruise liners and other transport providers may have their own pregnancy travel restrictions. Check these before booking and travelling, as pregnancy-related claims are not covered if you fail to comply with your carrier's pregnancy rules.

Eligibility, terms and exclusions apply. Please refer to your policy documents for full details.
