Yes. You can travel while pregnant, but your travel insurance is subject to pregnancy week limits, medical advice and your transport provider’s rules.
What should I check before travelling?
Before you book or travel:
- make sure your doctor and midwife are aware of your travel plans
- do not travel against medical advice
- check how many weeks pregnant you will be throughout your trip
- check the pregnancy travel rules of your airline, ferry, cruise company or other transport provider
Airlines and other transport providers can set their own restrictions for pregnant travellers.
What pregnancy week limits apply?
There is no cover under any section of the policy if you are travelling:
- on or after the 32nd week of a single pregnancy
- on or after the 24th week of a multiple pregnancy
Childbirth at or after these points is not considered a complication of pregnancy and is not covered.
You are also not covered for pregnancy-related claims if, when checking in or boarding, you do not comply with your carrier’s policy for pregnant travellers.
What about pregnancy complications?
Pregnancy and childbirth themselves are not considered an illness or injury. However, specified complications of pregnancy and childbirth can be covered for cancellation, cutting your trip short and medical emergency expenses, provided the policy conditions are met.
These can include complications such as miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes, emergency caesarean section and premature birth.
If you become pregnant after buying your policy or booking your trip, whichever is later, and you will be over the applicable pregnancy limit by your return date, cancellation cover may apply.
