Can I book my holiday before buying travel insurance?

Yes, you can book your holiday before purchasing your policy, but cancellation cover is not backdated to your holiday booking date.

Applies to

  • Plans: Budget, Silver, Gold and Black.
  • Policy types: Single Trip and Annual Multi-trip.
  • Cover: Cancellation cover, subject to your policy terms, conditions and exclusions.

When does cancellation cover start for Single Trip policies?

For a Single Trip policy, cancellation cover starts as soon as the premium is paid, or from the commencement date when the policy wording is issued.

If you booked your holiday before buying your Single Trip insurance, cancellation cover does not apply retrospectively to events that happened before cover started.

When does cancellation cover start for Annual Multi-trip policies?

For an Annual Multi-trip (AMT) policy, cancellation cover for each individual holiday starts on whichever of these dates is later:

  • The date you booked that holiday.
  • The policy start date shown on your policy schedule.

This applies whether you booked your holiday before or after purchasing your Annual Multi-trip insurance.

What if something happened before I bought travel insurance?

Your policy excludes claims arising from known events or circumstances that you were aware of when purchasing your policy or booking your trip.

Buying insurance after an event has happened does not make that event retrospectively covered.

Cancellation cover also applies only to necessary and unavoidable cancellations for reasons covered by your policy, subject to its terms and exclusions.

What if my holiday starts before my insurance?

Travel insurance cover cannot begin after you have left your home country.

For Annual Multi-trip policies, your outward and return journeys must take place within the policy dates shown on your schedule.

Before travelling, check your policy schedule to confirm when your insurance starts and the cancellation cover that applies.
