Double excess is an option that can reduce the price of your policy in return for you paying twice the standard excess if you make a claim.
What this article helps you do
This article explains how Double Excess works, how it affects a claim and which excesses are treated differently.
How does Double Excess work?
If you choose Double Excess:
- the price of your policy is reduced
- the standard excesses that apply to your policy are doubled
- your chosen excess level will be shown on your Policy Schedule
An excess is the amount you need to pay towards, or that is deducted from, a claim.
Standard excesses generally apply to each insured person and each claim or section of cover. Some sections work differently. For example, the Personal Liability excess applies per policy.
Are all excesses doubled?
No. The increased medical excess that applies to certain hazardous, amateur sporting and adventure, or winter sports activities is not doubled.
These activity-related medical excesses also cannot be removed by Excess Waiver or Zero Excess.
What if I use an EHIC or GHIC?
If you present a valid European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) when receiving medical treatment in the European Union, or another country where the card is valid, and this reduces your medical costs, the applicable medical expenses excess will be waived.
Which policies mention Double Excess?
The active Budget, Silver and Gold policy wordings refer to choosing an increased or Double Excess and checking the chosen excess on your Policy Schedule.
Read your policy documents to check the excess level shown on your Policy Schedule.
Eligibility, terms and exclusions apply. Please refer to your policy documents for full details.
