Why do I need cruise cover?

Cruises can come with problems that ordinary holidays may not, so Cruise Cover provides additional protection for cruise-specific situations.

If any part of your trip includes a cruise, the entire trip will not be covered unless Cruise Cover is included on your policy.

What this article helps you do

This article explains why Cruise Cover can be useful, what cruise-specific situations it is designed for, and what you need to check before travelling.

What Cruise Cover can help with

Cruise Cover can help with cruise-specific problems such as:

  • missing your cruise departure and needing extra travel or accommodation to catch up with the ship
  • being confined to your cabin for medical reasons
  • missing a scheduled port because of adverse weather or timetable restrictions
  • losing the value of pre-booked excursions you cannot use because you are confined to your cabin
  • needing extra travel to rejoin your cruise after temporary illness requiring hospital treatment on dry land
  • Any trip that contains an element of a cruise trip will not be covered without Cruise Cover.

Cruise holidays can also involve significant medical transport costs. If you become seriously ill or injured at sea, you may need medical transport to a hospital or, in some cases, repatriation to the UK.

Some cruise providers also require passengers to have comprehensive travel insurance in place before travelling.

What Cruise Cover includes

Cruise Cover can be added to Silver, Gold and Black policies. Budget policies do not cover cruise trips.

For Silver, Gold and Black policies, the cruise-specific benefits include:

  • Missed port departure
  • Cabin confinement
  • Itinerary change
  • Unused excursions
  • Cruise interruption

These benefits are subject to the conditions and exclusions of the policy.

What you need to check

For Silver, Gold and Black, Cruise Cover only applies when the appropriate additional premium has been paid and the cover is shown on your Policy Schedule.

Budget policies cannot add Cruise Cover and do not cover cruise trips.

Before booking or travelling on a cruise, check that your policy includes the cover you need and that any required Cruise Cover appears on your Policy Schedule.

Why medical cover matters on a cruise

Becoming seriously unwell or injured at sea can involve costly medical transport. In some circumstances, you may need to be transported from the ship for hospital treatment or flown back to the UK.
